Forests up in Northern California have not only seen a lot of natural fires but also prescribed fires. For those that don't know, prescribed fires are an act of setting specific areas of trees on fire in the hope that it controls natural fire. You can see the fallen tree behind this Douglas' Squirrel is all charred. Human intervention is a strange thing to me. I guess it's human nature to try and control stuff, but I worry that this also devastates wild animal populations. Their resilience is impressive, though.

The forests outside Eureka, CA, are some of my favorite spots to find a variety of Mushrooms.

These Otters were able to find a lot of food within the short amount of time that I spent watching them. Fish and Crustaceans were on the menu.

This Buff Tailed Coronet decided to just pierce the red bulb of this flower in search of nectar.

River Otters are so expressive. They always seem to be moving about. Even when they take a break, it's only for a minute, and then they are back to some sort of shenanigans.

A while ago I posted another photograph of this same Blue Heron where it was flying right in front of me. It was standing on this rock preening itself for a little while prior to that. Its thin feathers became sprawled out as it combed them with its beak.
