This is a very unique species that I've only ever seen at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in California. My wife and I visited late this season, so the Red Cage Fungus were pretty much dried up and orange in color like this one pictured. However, they can be a vibrant red when the time is right. They are part of the Stink Horn family, which means they get a bit gooey and attract flies. Very neat species to look at in person.
