I was fortunate to keep running into these Rock Wrens. Actually, it felt more like they kept finding me. This might be my favorite photograph of them. I specifically framed the shot with two Lupine stalks in the foreground straddling the Wren. My lens made their green leaves and purple flowers look faint, as if they were softly watercolored on top of the rest of the scene.

I like shooting subjects through their surroundings. And by surroundings, that inherently means nature. My favorite style of photograph is getting a nice shot of a subject as seen through some foliage, brush, boulders, anything natural. I especially like when some of that nature is near the subject but also further away. Further away in both directions, preferably, near and far. This creates a photograph similar to this one where the subject is sharp and in focus, as the star. The branches and leaves that are near the subject are also in focus so that you can see their detail. And the branches that are near and far are out of focus in their own unique ways, painting the entire scene very beautifully.

There were a bunch of baby/juvenile Squirrels up in Mt. Lassen. The one in this photograph was pretty small. I like the composition of this Squirrel between a small rock and an even smaller rock. I think it thought it was blending in.

This was the first critter I photographed while up on Mt. Lassen recently. Even before the Nutcracker with the golden sky. The sky wasn't golden at this time because the sun was exposed right on the horizon but then quickly was hidden by clouds. A little light was coming through the clouds so this is softly backlit, which is neat.

My earliest memories are of being outdoors around critters. My family had a travel trailer and we took it to campgrounds around California, which taught me something I didn't understand at the time: exploring nature is basically free. Then my siblings got older, the trips stopped, and I let it go for other things. Video games. Graphic design. Girls.
