On a walk through the forest on my way to a waterfall one morning I found this tiny little Mushroom growing out of a hole in this log that was on the ground. It wasn’t tall enough to stick out the top of the hole but I hope that it made it. The hole was probably created by an Acorn Woodpecker.

On a hike I stumbled upon a fallen tree with some Turkey Tail thriving on one of the broken ends.

I hope to take many more photographs of Mushrooms this year. I find photographing Mushrooms actually a bit more challenging than wildlife. Mushrooms don’t move around so there is only so much to work with. Getting dramatic lighting in forests is also very tricky, especially right where I need it. I take a decent amount of Mushroom photos but only share a fraction of what I capture. I want to share good photographs with you, and I’m very picky.

I’m not sure what kind of Mushroom this is. Most are very hard to identify just by looking at it. Sometimes in order to identify mushrooms you need to taste, cut, spore print, etc. I generally just take photographs and don’t mess with those other things. I remember my wife liked this pair when she saw them.

I’m proud to report that Banana Slug 06 was the first place winner at the 2026 Wild Mushroom Fair presented by the Los Angeles Mycological Society. This is the second time I entered the photo competition at this fair and the second time I won first place so I am very honored that people enjoy my photographs enough to vote for them.

My main reason for entering this competition was to simply promote my work and try and get people to my website so if you came here either from picking up one of my Postcards or from social media related to the event I would like to thank you very much. While my work is mainly focused on wildlife, I do have more Mushroom photos coming so check back often ☺︎.

My wife will enjoy this photograph because it includes Mushrooms. But I happen to think the Scaly Throated Foliage Gleaner is special as well. It certainly has one of the craziest names of any bird I’ve discovered.

Some Mushrooms I won’t be able to identify. This is one of them. The photographs of the ones I’m not positive about will be saved as simply Mushroom with whatever number comes after in the sequence.
