Tufted Puffin 01
Tufted Puffin 01
This was at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Haystack Rock is a special place being a site where Tufted Puffins nest. Tufted Puffins live most of their lives out at Sea and only come to shore for breeding. Try not to mistake Tufted Puffins for Atlantic Puffins. Atlantic Puffins are a more commonly known species and get more love when it comes to advertisements that use Puffins, and cartoon characters of Puffins. Even some places in Cannon Beach sell merchandise of Atlantic Puffins instead of their prized Tufted Puffins which is a bit unfortunate in my opinion. Tufted Puffins can be distinguished by their yellow tufts that come from the top of their heads.
I didn’t have too much time to visit Haystack Rock so this was one of the best photos I could get during that short time. The Puffins would sore off the edge and make a big loop in the sky and then head back to their dens. They did this for seemingly no reason. We even spoke to a student whom was studying the Tufted Puffin behavior and he too didn’t know why. Maybe it is just for fun before heading back out to the barren Sea.

California Quail 02
This is a juvenile California Quail that I saw fly onto a dead tree near me while I was watching its covey (flock). The tree was being taken over by a trailing Blackberry Bush and you can see the Blackberries in the photograph.

Banana Slug 01
Banana Slug 01
Banana Slugs are primarily found in moist forests of the Pacific Northwest including Northern California. There are actually three main species of Banana Slugs but I will call them all Banana Slugs here because I’m not an expert. I have fond memories of finding Banana Slugs as a child when on vacation in the Redwoods and I continue to enjoy encountering them today.
