The branch that this Bluebird is perched on was resting on the ground below the tree it had broken off of. The branch and the bird were in the shade under that tree while the golden grass in the background was lighting up from the Sun, which was setting to the right. That's why this photograph looks the way that it does. The bird is in the shade while the background was full of light.
