Brown Pelican 02
Brown Pelican 02
This is another shot from our Elkhorn Slough tour near Monterey Bay, CA. Yes, this was taken from a little boat. I should have asked our guide or captain what the piece of metal the Brown Pelican is sitting on was, as it was sticking out of the water about six feet. The portion in the photograph looks like an anchor, but it was much too long to be one. There wasn’t anything else around it. Just this one giant piece of metal that the Pelican claimed. Well, by the looks of it, many Pelicans probably perch there.

White Bellied Woodstar 01
Woodstar Hummingbirds are some of my favorite. I didn’t experience them until I went to Ecuador which is home to a few different species. Woodstars are very small and they float around like Bumblebees, rather than how you normally see Hummingbirds move about. Watching them float from flower to flower is very mesmerizing.

I will be sporadically posting more photographs from Ecuador. I don’t want to say that they are from Ecuador within each post as that might get repetitive. Instead, you can check the tags associated with each post if you’d like to find out where the shot was taken.
In case you don’t know how blogs work, all posts have assigned “tags” and “categories”. Only the category shows up on the main Field Notes feed. Tags can be found by clicking a specific post and scrolling down past the free wallpaper downloads. Categories are very general like Birds, Mammals, Insects, Fungi, Landscapes, etc. Tags are a little more refined, like Sword Billed Hummingbird, Hummingbirds, Ecuador, etc. You can click on a category or tag to see more photos within that category or tag. So if you click on the bird category, you will see all of my bird posts. If you click on the Hummingbird tag then you will see all posts tagged with Hummingbird. I hope this is helpful along with the search function where you can search any of those terms.

Ruby Crowned Kinglets can be found all over North America, though their prevalence shifts depending on the time of year. You’ve probably seen one before, even if you didn’t know it at the time. Their small size and round shape make them easy to identify in addition to their yellow/olive body and whitish areas around their eyes. Overall they are fairly unique looking in the bird kingdom, but they do have a doppelgänger called a Hutton’s Vireo.

Western Bluebird 02
Western Bluebird 02
Western Bluebirds don’t seem like vicious killers but they do hunt insects for food. Looking into this Bluebird's eyes, you can see the determination. I've seen enough nature photography to know this is a unique image I'm sharing with you. You've probably seen similar photographs featuring Hawks, Bald Eagles, Owls, or some other more exotic-looking bird swooping down to catch prey. But I enjoy showing you unusual views of more common creatures because they don’t get enough attention and capturing such images is just as tough as capturing those exotic-looking birds. Next time you see a flock of Bluebirds, stop and watch what they are doing and listen to their sounds.

California Quail 11
California Quail 11
I took this photograph while the Sun was setting at a local preserve near my house. A decent number of people use this preserve as a walking and biking path because it is very beautiful as you can see. Most people don’t notice the things I do, such as baby Quail chicks. I’d like to bring more awareness to the animals that cohabitate with us at places like preserves. I see many people let their dogs off-leash at preserves like this one and in other natural areas and I think that is unfair to the wildlife, like this mother Quail and her chick. Even friendly dogs have a prey drive and encountering a baby Quail chick like this one wouldn't take much to harm it. There is a reason why it’s generally unlawful to unleash your dog at public properties such as these and why signs are posted. Please consider the lives of the wildlife that may be living there.
