White Crowned Sparrow 01
White Crowned Sparrow 01
An early morning photo of a White Crowned Sparrow in Northern California. Males have the distinct white crown of this species and females have a light beige crown with brown markings. Do you see the female in the photograph?

This is the second photograph of this particular California Quail. I really like how the tree was lit up in the background.

Annas Hummingbird 01
Annas Hummingbird 01
There is a caveat with this image, Annas Hummingbird 01. You see, this is my resident Anna’s Hummingbird. This male Anna’s Hummingbird lives in my backyard and drinks from my Hummingbird feeder. In my photograph it is taking flight off of its favorite perch. From that branch it looks after its Hummingbird feeder and scares away any other Hummingbird that gets near it. Precisely what it is doing in this photograph.

This was taken in Cannon Beach, Oregon. I liked the contrast between the dark muted colors and the white stripes and red feet of the Pigeon Guillemot.

Killdeer 01
Killdeer 01
If you are not a birder you may not know that this bird is called a Killdeer. And now you might be asking yourself why this bird is called a Killdeer. That’s a question that I had as well when I first learned of the name. But it’s not an answer I care to find out. I think it’s funny that this little shorebird has the name Killdeer and I don’t want the answer to disappoint me. So I’m just going to avoid it as long as I can.
I’ve always been intrigued with the red in the Killdeer’s eyes. I’ve seen a lot of birds and it is a very unique feature for the Killdeer.

Common Merganser 01
Common Merganser 01
This is a group of juvenile Common Merganser. I found them early one morning exhibiting a behavior I had never seen before. Their mother was close by but they certainly were not shy of straying away from her. The juveniles would stop and eat by the edge of the river but sometimes they would all get a burst of energy and take off as if they all decided to have an impromptu race. And that is what they are doing in this photo. The races would only last a few seconds and things would calm down but out of nowhere they would challenge each other once again. It was very fun to watch especially in this decent size grouping.

Harlequin Duck 01
Harlequin Duck 01
I know that a lot of photographers, especially those that focus on birds, prefer taking photos of male birds instead of females. And the reason for that is that generally male birds look different from their female counterparts. Males are usually brighter in color with more fancy patterns. This is said to be a feature that they developed to attract females.
While male birds are beautiful, I think female birds are just as special and unique in their own ways. This is a female Harlequin Duck that I spotted in Cannon Beach, Oregon.
